My name is Maximilian Semrad, I am a 19-year-old from Austria, and I want to share my experience 
as a volunteer at Bukas Palad. It was an incredible opportunity for me to explore the Philippines, learn about a different culture, and make a positive impact.
My 10-month journey at Bukas Palad enabled me to engage in valuable 
community work. Together with the team, I participated in food pack distributions, offering essential aid to those in need. As my journey continued, I became more involved in the BPLC Bukas Palad Learning Community, a nursery center for children 3-5 years old. I was able to form deep connections with the children who captured my heart from the beginning. With the continuous support of my colleagues and friends, I embraced the challenges and rewards of this unique experience.
Right from the start the Filipino people impressed me with their kindness, hospitality, and positivity. They taught me valuable life lessons, I learned to be more mindful, to embrace diversity and I became more comfortable communicating with people from various backgrounds.
Working with the children in the Bukas Palad Learning Community taught me patience, and flexibility, and boosted my confidence in interacting with little ones. It was a joy to see their smiles and get to know each of them personally. Being part of the Bukas Palad community gave me a sense of belonging and made me feel loved and appreciated.
During my time at Bukas Palad, I discovered more about myself, my strengths, and my weaknesses. This experience empowered me to be more adaptable
and positive when facing future changes in life. The lessons I learned and the memories I made will stay with me forever.
Still relatively young, this journey has transformed me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. It has opened my eyes to the beauty of cultural exchange and the importance of community. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Bukas Palad and contribute to their meaningful work.
My time was an unforgettable adventure. I want to encourage anyone seeking personal growth, meaningful connections, and a chance to make a positive impact to volunteer at Bukas Palad Cebu Foundation. My colleagues who have become friends, the children and Danilo will always hold a special place in my heart.
